There are very few items in menswear that can genuinely claim to be timeless.
Styles evolve. Trends come and go. Colours move in and out of fashion. Yet the white pocket square remains one of the simplest and most enduring details in a gentleman's wardrobe.
It is not loud or showy. It is simply a small detail that suggests the wearer has taken a little extra care and it can be a great piece to start with when finding your confidence with styling.
For us, however, the appeal of the white pocket square goes beyond style. As with everything we do at the Belfast Bow Company, it is also about fabric, heritage and craftsmanship.
When made from Irish linen, our white pocket square becomes more than just an accessory; for us it becomes a celebration of one of Ireland's greatest textile traditions. Have a look for yourself here.
The Perfect Companion to Any Jacket
One of the reasons the white pocket square has endured for generations is its remarkable versatility.
The same white pocket square can work effortlessly with a navy blazer worn for a summer lunch, a tweed sports jacket on an autumn walk or a wedding morning three-piece suit.
If you’re still working up to having the confidence to wear brightly coloured pocket squares, a white pocket square can act as an understated finishing touch that gives the impression that you can effortlessly achieve that ‘put together’ look.
We think it is perhaps the only accessory in menswear that can be worn equally well with a linen suit in July and a Harris tweed jacket in December.

Why Irish Linen?
The Belfast Bow Company has a special attachment to Irish Linen, however Ireland's relationship with linen stretches back centuries.
Long before fast fashion and synthetic fibres, Irish linen earned a reputation around the world for its quality, durability and character. Belfast became known as Linenopolis, exporting fine linen across Europe and beyond.
We use Irish Linen woven within 5 miles of our workshop in Dromore, Co Down to make our white pocket squares. Each pocket square is cut by hand from the roll, pressed and carefully stitched in our workshop.
What makes Irish linen particularly suited to a pocket square is its texture. Unlike silk, which can sometimes appear overly polished and shiny, our linen possesses a natural character. Tiny variations in the weave catch the light differently and create subtle depth. The matte finish feels understated and confident.
A white Irish linen pocket square doesn't and shouldn’t look perfect in the conventional sense. That's precisely why it looks so good and has stood the test of time in the world of men’s accessories.

Why Size Matters
One detail that we have carefully considered is the size of our White Irish Linen pocket square.
Many pocket squares are produced at 35cm or even 40cm square. While this can work for lightweight silks, linen behaves very differently.
Linen has more body and structure, which means an oversized linen pocket square can quickly become bulky in the breast pocket, creating an awkward lump beneath the jacket.
After considerable testing, we settled on a more considered 25cm (10 inch) square.
Large enough to hold its shape and create elegant folds, yet compact enough to sit comfortably in the pocket without overwhelming the line of the jacket.
On occasion customers have specific design requirements and we can certainly make a pocket square to your exact specifications – on the many perks of buying from the Belfast Bow Company. You can contact us here to discuss your specific needs.

The Pocket Square in Practice
If you're unsure how a white Irish linen pocket square works in everyday dressing, one of our favourite examples is menswear creator Elliot Giles. Look him up on Instagram & YouTube @mrelliottgiles for lots of linen inspiration.

Whether paired with tailoring, knitwear and a blazer, or a more relaxed jacket, he frequently uses a white linen pocket square as the final detail that brings an outfit together.
What is particularly interesting is that the pocket square rarely becomes the focal point. Instead, it provides structure and balance, quietly bringing an outfit together.
This is perhaps the greatest lesson a pocket square can teach us. Good style is often less about adding more and more pieces and more about choosing the right ones.
How to Wear a White Irish Linen Pocket Square
With a Blazer
Perhaps the easiest place to start.
A navy blazer, light blue shirt and white Irish linen pocket square remains one of the most reliable combinations in menswear. It works for business, social occasions and everything in between.
With a Tweed Jacket
This is our favoured way of styling the linen pocket square as we love how texture pairs beautifully with texture.
A white linen pocket square provides contrast against the richness of tweed while maintaining a traditional and understated appearance.
With a Suit
Whether worn with a tie, bow tie or open collar, a white pocket square introduces a sense of completeness to tailored clothing.
At a Wedding
For grooms, fathers of the bride, groomsmen and guests alike, a white pocket square offers versatility that coloured alternatives often struggle to match.
It allows ties, flowers and other details to provide colour while maintaining an elegant and timeless appearance.

A Thoughtful Gift
We’ve designed our white Irish linen pocket square so that it also makes a thoughtful and practical gift.
Unlike many gifts that are enjoyed briefly and forgotten, a pocket square becomes part of a gentleman's wardrobe for years to come. Whether given to a groom, your husband on your linen anniversary or simply someone who appreciates well-made things, it is a gift that combines usefulness, heritage and craftsmanship.
We have given just as much thought to the presentation as we have the pocket square itself. Each one is supplied in our signature gift box, designed not only to create a memorable unboxing experience but also to provide a safe place to store the pocket square between wears.
For those looking for a meaningful gift with a connection to Irish craftsmanship, our white Irish linen pocket square is difficult to surpass.
A Small Detail That Makes a Difference
We believe that a white Irish linen pocket square adds a touch of contrast. A hint of texture. A sense that the wearer has considered the details.
With all the passing trends that come and go, it remains a staple piece in a gentleman’s wardrobe.
The fact that it is made from Irish linen gives it a heritage and timelessness that few accessories can match, allowing you to wear it with an extra sense of pride.

Is linen or silk better for a pocket square?
Both have their place, but linen offers texture, structure and a more relaxed appearance that works exceptionally well for everyday wear.
